I remember the era of Pagers in 1980s when Mobile phone were not there. Having Pager was a status symbol then. Currently out of 8.0 Billion people in this world , 7.3 Billions ( 91% ) people have mobile phone. Out of that 6.3 Billions people have smart phones. The history of mobile phones is a story of constant innovation and technological advancements, leading to the powerful devices we use today. If some one have enough money there is advance Smart phone available in India with a price of Rs 2.2 Lakh.
In 1975 a Japanese inventor made a landline phone which can transmit photos to people on other side , and one can talk and see each other live. No body believe that it is possible. But who know after 20 years of that episode the whole of world will be communicating using tiny mobile phone. In 1973 by an Engineer in Motorola invented a mobile phone called DynaTAC 8000X which was with limited functions . In 1994 IBM-Simon brand mobile phone was launched in the market in USA . The history of mobile phones dates back to the mid-20th century when the concept of wireless communication started taking shape. In less than 30 years hand held wireless mobile phones have travelled the journey from a tiny Pager in 1986 to smart phones with 1-TB capacity in 2023. From 1G to 5G generation system it takes 45 years which made mobile phone communication superfast and flawless. Mobile phone journey is as below –
Mobile Phone started in 1980
- Introduction of 1G: The first generation of mobile phone networks, commonly referred to as 1G, emerged in the early 1980s. with analog systems offered limited voice quality, low capacity, and were primarily used for voice calls.
- Transition to Digital: In the 1990s, 2G – (Second generation mobile phone networks were introduced, featuring digital technology and improved call quality. The transition from analog to digital allowed for better voice clarity, reduced interference, and the introduction of text messaging.
- Rise of GSM: The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard was introduced in the early 1990s and became the dominant technology for 2G networks. GSM standardized various aspects of communication, such as voice compression, allowing for improved international roaming capabilities.
- Mobile Phone Evolution: Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, mobile phones evolved rapidly. They became smaller, lighter, and more affordable. Features such as monochrome screens, SMS (Short Message Service), and simple games were introduced. Nokia, Motorola, and Ericsson were among the leading manufacturers.
- Introduction of 3G and Mobile Internet: The arrival of 3G networks in the early 2000s marked a significant milestone. 3G offered faster data transfer rates, enabling mobile internet access, video calls, and multimedia services on phones.
- Smartphone Revolution: The launch of the iPhone in 2007 by Apple revolutionized the mobile phone industry. This sparked the smartphone era, with other companies like Samsung, HTC, and later, Google’s Android platform, entering the market with Android and iOS system .
- 4G and LTE: 4G (fourth generation) networks began rolling out in the late 2000s, providing even faster internet speeds and improved network capacity, offering high-speed data connectivity and enabling more advanced mobile experiences.
- Current Trends: Currently, 5G networks are being deployed globally, offering even faster speeds, lower latency, and greater capacity. This technology is expected to support advancements like augmented reality, virtual reality, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, Artificial intelligence AI.
86% Indians have mobile phones
India has a population of 1.4 Billions out of that 1.2Billion has mobile phone ( ie 86%) . 600 Millions Indian have smart phones . ( ie 42%) . One can buy cheapest smart phone is India for Rs 5,000/= ( Model- Jio Phone next ). And the most expensive phone Samsung Galaxy W21 which cost Rs 2.2 Lakh. Most expensive iPhone in India is iPhone -14 Prp Max 1-TB for Rs 1.72 Lakh.

iPhone lead the world market
iPhone ( Apple ) has the largest share ( 27%) in the market on Mobile phone sale. Samsung stand at 26% at worldwide sale . Company like NOKIA who were the world leaders in 1980s on sale of Mobile phone do not figure in list of top Smart mobile phone sellers. Nokia phone NOKIA-3310 was one of the most known phone during 1990s . Phone using Camera sharing pictures was invented in 1997. Smart Phone – iPhone was launched in 2007 , Samsung in 2004 , Nokia 1998.

Technology of smart phones are changing very fast . As per experts the mobile phone will no longer will be held by hand in near future. Wristband mobile phone is already being tested for market launch. With the introduction of Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) , the future phone may be get connected to Reading glass or via smart watches. High end smart Phones have technical superior smart feature which one may not need it al all . So don’t be copy cat and buy expensive phone. For ordinary use Smart Phone with 64GB memory is enough .
